We have been experiencing increased demand for weight loss injections which is taking up increased number of GP appointments from other clinical work.

The current advice is that we cannot prescribe any weight loss injections

 

Wegovy can only be prescribed as part of a tier 3 weight management service of which there are none commissioned in this area.

Mounjaro will be prescribable in the future for a very small and limited number of patients in year 1 (mid 2025).

Tirzepatide will initially be offered to individuals facing the most significant health risks related to their weight. Most people who fall within this category should only expect to get access to tirzepatide through primary care services by mid-2025 at the earliest with timelines subject to further national guidance being made available, national funding allocations and ICB implementation/decision making.

The patients who will be eligible will have 4 or more of the following conditions: 

• hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus

• AND and body mass index over 40 (or 37.5 in BAME patients).

Please do not book an appointment to discuss these injections until later in the year when they are available and only if you believe you are in an eligible group. We will update the website as information becomes available.
